The core focus of my research is on visuospatial cognition and computation at the interface of Cognition, Artificial Intelligence, Interaction and Design. We develop cognitive assistive technologies and cognitive interaction systems (with a special emphasis on AI-driven design technologies) in application contexts where human-centred engineering is crucial: architecture and built environment (i.e., human-environment behaviour), autonomous systems (i.e., cognitive interaction and control), communications and media technologies (i.e., visuo-auditory synthesis and perception).

Our research emphasises the study of human-behaviour (embodied multimodal interaction) in naturalistic settings as a principal means of technology driven human-centred cognitive assistance in planning / decision-making / design situations requiring an interplay of commonsense, creative, and specialist visuospatial thinking.

Basic research methods developed have been driven by / applied in collaboration with industry partners in areas such as: visuo-auditory digital media design (e.g., film, animation, immersive content), large-scale public space design (e.g., hospitals), cognitive vision & perception systems (e.g., for self-driving vehicles, geospatial information systems).

PREVIOUSLY

previously: Professor within the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bremen, and Stiftungs Professor at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI Bremen) in Germany (Human-Centred Cognitive Assistance Lab / www). Before that, I was member of the Cognitive Systems group, first as a DAAD Scholar, and subsequently during 2008-2010 as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. During 2011-2014, I have also been an elected member and principal investigator in the Spatial Cognition Center (Transregio SFB/TR 8 / www), which ran as a joint initiative between the Universities of Bremen and Freiburg during 2003 - 2014.

: From 2002 - 2007, based at the Department of Computer Science at La Trobe University (Melbourne, Australia) where I completed a Masters in Information Technology (2004), and a PhD in Computer Science (2008). Till 2011, underwent basic schooling completing a Bachelor of Economics at the Narsee Monjee College of Economics (Mumbai, India).
